Physics Department History

Life has become so very comfortable because of the engineering works of today. This became possible due to great inventions done in the basic field like Physics. The great scientists like Newton, Thomas Alva Edison and many more have contributed to the field of science. So we can say basic science is the basic of all sciences. Thus motivating our students to undertake researches in the basic fields like physics is the motto our department.

SJVP College was established by his holiness 1008 Shree Vageesha Panditaradya Shivacharya Mahaswamiji of Shreeshaila Peeta in the year 1970 to extend the benefits of higher education to the young students of Harihar and its surrounding villages. It started functioning with only 90 students in the beginning. Now it has grown into a big and famous college with nearly 2000 students studying every year. Even since its beginning the college has been achieving academic excellence. So, the Govt. has given the 3 star status in the year 2001 and autonomous status to the college since 2005.

The department of physics was introduced in the college right form the beginning i.e., from 1970-71. Shree. K.S. Prabhakar Rao was the only lecturer in the department. In 1975 Shree.R.Sivananda joined the department as lecturer. Later in 1988 Shree. H. Yallppa joined the department as lecturer. Shree K.S.Prabhakar Rao after putting 31 and half years of service as H.O.D. of Physics retired from service in the year 2001. Then Shree. R. Sivananda became the Head of the Department. With the assistance of grants and efforts of management of separate block was given for the department of Physics.

The Physics laboratory is well equipped with good quality instruments like Inco. Make optic benches and dark room which are suitable for conducting light experiments very accurately. It is also provided with sufficient number of teak wood working tables and each table is provided with supply mains. The lab is provided with instruments like CRO, discharge tubes, Function Generators, Digital meters for conducting experiments with semiconductor devices. The laboratory also has good number of steel Almairas to keep sophisticated apparatus safe and dust free.

We have electric generator to conduct practical whenever there is power failure. The total cost of the equipments in the department from 1971 to 2003 is Rs. 2, 47, 101 – 00. In the year 2003-04 apparatus worth Rs. 13,000 – 00 were purchased from financial assistance of management. In 2004 – 05 apparatus work Rs. 30,000 – 00 was purchased under U.G.C grants. At present we have sufficient good quality apparatus worth Rs. 2, 90,000 – 00.

The laboratory is spacious and can accommodate 25-30 students at a time to conduct experiments. A staff is also provided in the laboratory.

Physics Department Activities

ACAEMIC ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. Guidance to students: Apart from the regular work the students are given advice and guidance about repairing themselves to face examination with confidence.
  2. Interaction with parents regarding students progress: Parents of the students whose performance are not satisfactory have been called to the department and necessary instructions have been given to take care of their children.
  3. Interaction/assistance with out going students about the future prospectus: Information regarding possible placement of getting employment opportunities being informed to the out going students. As a result majority of the students have secured placement in private sectors. The importance of higher education is given. As a result many students joined MBA, MCA and PG courses.

BRIDGE COURSE

When the students enter into PUC after getting through SSLC they feel it difficult to cope with the heavy syllabus. Similarly when they enter into degree getting through PUC they feel it difficult to cope with semester scheme. So to make them feel comfortable with semester scheme of examination they are given some guidance and hints regarding how they should prepare themselves in studying and facing the examination in the form of Bridge Course. Also they are exposed to the different instruments that they have to use while doing labs. This is done at beginning of the academic year. This is done by taking extra classes and by not affecting the regular classes.
